E-commerce, or the buying and selling of goods and services online, has become an integral part of the global economy. In Bangladesh, the rise of e-commerce has been a significant force in driving economic growth and promoting trade. The journey of e-commerce in Bangladesh began in the early 2000s, with the establishment of online marketplaces like AmarDesh Online and Rokomari. However, it wasn’t until the mid-2000s that e-commerce started gaining traction in the country. With the growing popularity of smartphones and internet accessibility, e-commerce platforms like Daraz, AjkerDeal, and Bagdoom emerged, changing the landscape of online shopping in Bangladesh.
Since then, the e-commerce industry in Bangladesh has grown exponentially. According to a report by the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services, the country’s e-commerce market is expected to reach 3 billion USD by 2021. The growth in e-commerce has not only provided consumers with more options and convenience, but it has also given small and medium-sized enterprises a platform to reach a broader market. In recent years, the government has also taken steps to promote the growth of e-commerce by introducing policies and initiatives to create a more conducive environment for online businesses. Looking ahead, the future of e-commerce in Bangladesh is expected to be even brighter, with the increasing adoption of new technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality. It is clear that e-commerce has come a long way in Bangladesh, and the potential for growth and innovation is limitless.
